In the mid 18th century, French Jesuit Jean-Denis Attiret, a foreigner yet an official painter to the Chinese Imperial Court, is commissioned to paint the portrait of empress Ulanara as she desperately hopes to rekindle the love of her growingly indifferent husband and emperor.

The film portrays the feverish encounter between the Chinese empress and the Jesuit painter. A moment when the electric relationship between a painter and his model is caught between the constraints of the court’s rigid etiquette and intense cultural differences.
